Luminous Landscapes & Still Lifes.

Artwork:

Bob Stuth-Wade. Gift Canna. Watercolour. 1998.

This compelling watercolour transforms a cluster of canna blossoms into a meditation on light, form and impermanence. Set against a deep black background, the luminous orange, crimson and ochre petals emerge with remarkable presence, their sculptural forms shaped through transparent glazes and subtle tonal transitions that celebrate the unique luminosity of the medium. The composition is intimate, anchored by a strong vertical stem and softened by curling petals. Rather than depicting the flowers in perfect bloom, the artist embraces their graceful decline, finding elegance in their curling forms and softened edges.

Artist:

Bob Stuth-Wade is an American painter celebrated for his luminous landscapes and still lifes that reflect a profound connection to the natural world. Working primarily in oil, while also producing accomplished watercolours and mixed media works on paper, he is best known for his naturalistic depictions of the Texas landscape. Painting frequently en plein air, Stuth-Wade seeks to capture the distinctive light, atmosphere and expansive character of the Lone Star State, particularly places such as Big Bend National Park and the countryside surrounding his home in Dublin, Texas. His paintings are rooted in direct observation yet convey a deeply personal and contemplative response to the landscape, shaped by early mentorship from Perry Nichols and Mary Sloan and informed by a lifelong commitment to painting from nature.

Stuth-Wade was born in Norfolk, Virginia, and has lived in Texas for most of his life. His artistic education was largely self-directed, beginning under the guidance of Dallas artist Perry Nichols while he was a student at Jesuit College Preparatory School. He studied with both Nichols and Mary Sloan, and has exhibited continuously since his first solo exhibition at the age of eighteen. Career highlights include participation in the Ballinglen Arts Foundation Artists’ Fellowship Programme in Ireland (2006) and serving as Visiting Professor at Baylor University in 2011. His work has been featured in numerous museum and gallery exhibitions, including Shared Visions: Texas Artists Then and Now (2006), Bob Stuth-Wade: Landforms (2011), The Texas Aesthetic (2019–2021), and The Art of Texas State Parks (2023–24). His paintings are held in the collections of the San Angelo Museum of Art, The Grace Museum, as well as many corporate and private collections.

The Canadian Art Preservation Foundation posts short biographies and information on artists and artwork from its collection in a not-so-subtle attempt to capture your attention and interest in our mission, but we also just want to keep this artwork in view. We are excited about the art we collect and want to share it with you.

CAPF is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the artwork of Canada’s superstar artists for future generations to examine, study and exhibit – the ones you know and the ones you might not know so well. We accept artwork, journals, notes, letters, exhibition catalogues and anything else that might comprise a visual and/or intellectual “portrait” (ahem, please pardon the pun) of a particular artist.
