“Adjusting the Tappets” (1983)

Acquired directly from the artist, this thoughtful etching, “Adjusting the Tappets”, shows the introspective nature of much of Robert Young’s work. This is an early piece from 1983, describing himself pondering over the task of adjusting the tappets on his car. His draftsmanship is evident in his angled depiction of the manual, his inclusion of other items in mechanical perspective. As for the metaphorical perspectives, he describes himself in several views, the one in the sketchbook, page open, revealing his attitude to his task and his comfortable clothing, while underneath, there are alternatives of fabric which indicate other options for his personality.

In this period of his opus, text often gives a clue as to the meaning of the image. His fascination with texture and pattern lasted throughout his career.

Robert Young passed away April 15, 2023.
