Bruce Woycik is a BC painter whose work is distinguished by its masterful treatment of illumination, using light and shadow to create atmosphere, emotional resonance, and a strong sense of place. Working primarily in oil paint, Woycik describes himself as a painter rather than an artist, underscoring his lifelong commitment to the medium and to the act of painting itself. His images often focus on the defining details of neighbourhoods, streetscapes, and everyday environments, capturing the visual cues that evoke collective and personal memories. Mood is central to his practice; through richly layered paint, heightened colour, and luminous effects, he transforms familiar subjects into evocative studies of experience, memory, and perception.
Originally from Prince George, BC, Woycik attended the University of Victoria before leaving to pursue painting full time. He has exhibited his work in public and private galleries since 1980 and has developed an extensive exhibition record across BC and beyond. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at Elliott Louis Gallery in Vancouver, as well as an exhibition at Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in New York in 2004. His numerous group exhibitions include presentations at Elliott Louis Gallery, Jenkins Showler Gallery, Graham Sayell Gallery, the Campbell River Art Gallery, the Roundhouse in Vancouver, and Amsterdam Whitney Gallery. Woycik’s work was also featured in International Artist Magazine’s Master Painters of the World Canada Showcase (2001) and in the Magazin’ Art Biennial Guide to Canadian Artists (2000–2001). In 2023, his paintings were included in an exhibition at the Bentall Gallery in Vancouver presented by the Vancouver Visual Art Foundation.
